Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about stump grinding, stump removal, pricing, and scheduling in the Lincoln area.
Do you offer free estimates?
Yes. Every stump grinding or removal job starts with a free quote, either over the phone or with an on-site visit for larger or unusual jobs.
How do you price a job?
Pricing is based on the diameter of the stump and its height above ground level. Call or submit a quote request with those two measurements for a fast, accurate estimate.
What's the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Stump grinding shreds the stump and surface roots down below grade, leaving the area ready for mulch or reseeding. Stump removal fully extracts the stump and root ball, which is the better choice if you're planting a new tree or building in that spot.
How deep do you grind the stump?
Stumps are ground well below ground level so the area is left clean and free of tripping hazards or protrusions.
What happens to the wood chips?
Customers can choose to keep the wood chips as free mulch or have them hauled away. This is confirmed with you before the job starts.
Can you get close to a fence, wall, or foundation?
Yes. Our equipment can grind close to structures and fit through narrow side yards and gates without causing damage.
Are you insured?
Yes, Nebraska Stump Busters is fully insured.
What areas do you serve?
Lincoln, NE and surrounding towns within about 30 miles. See our full Service Area page for the complete list.
How soon can you get to my job?
Scheduling depends on current demand and job size - call for current availability and to get on the schedule.
Do I need to be home during the service?
Not necessarily, as long as the stump is accessible and any gates are unlocked. We can coordinate details by phone ahead of time.

More Stump Grinding Questions
Will grass grow back in the area where the stump was ground?
Yes. After raking the wood chips level with the surrounding grade, you can seed or sod the area right away. Some minor settling may occur in the first season as remaining roots decompose underground, but grass fills in normally.
Is stump grinding safe when there are buried utility lines nearby?
We work carefully around all marked utility lines. Before your appointment, call 811 (the free national 'Call Before You Dig' service) to have buried gas, electric, water, and cable lines marked in your yard. Let us know about any known lines when requesting your quote.
What happens to the roots left underground after grinding?
Grinding removes the stump and the surface roots within the grinding radius. Deeper tap roots and lateral roots remain underground and slowly decompose over several years. In most cases this causes no problems for landscaping, sod, or flower beds planted over the area.
Can I rent a stump grinder and do the job myself?
Rental grinders are available, but consumer-grade rental machines are far less powerful than professional equipment - large or hardwood stumps can take hours of work and multiple blade changes. Professional grinding also includes cleanup and chip-disposal options that make the job faster and less labor-intensive overall.
